Hepatitis B Awareness Day at UCI SOM

May is Hepatitis B Awareness month. In conjunction with the Los Angeles and Orange County Hepatitis B Coalition’s press conference in Carson, CA on May 20, 2008, UCI APAMSA coordinated a Hepatitis Awareness Day on its own medical school campus. Students were encouraged to wear jade or green as part of the Hepatitis B Jade Ribbon campaign and to adorn jade-colored ribbons distributed before class. During the lunch hour break, APAMSA leaders gave a brief presentation to the future physicians on Hepatitis B and the importance of checking the vaccination status of patients, particularly Asian Americans, during routine clinic visits. A working draft of the Los Angeles/Orange County Hepatitis Resource Guide was also debuted. To conclude the event, students enjoyed the chocolate chip cookies and delicious cupcakes topped with jade ribbon icing, baked by APAMSA members.
